About Mike Jones
Who is Mike Jones? Prior to gaining mainstream exposure during late 2004 and early 2005 with his single “Still Tippin’,” Houston-based MC and self-promoter extraordinaire Mike Jones had long been a stalwart of the Swishahouse label, with a handful of releases under his belt.
His breakout album, Who Is Mike Jones?, was released in April of 2005, distributed via Warner Brothers. It topped out at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. His second effort on a major label, the EP/DVD set The American Dream, followed in July 2007, but not before another series of mixtape releases. Two years later he returned with the single “Cuddy Buddy” along with the album The Voice. He found his niche with songs that repeated his name and cell phone number until neither could be forgotten.
About Slim Thug
Slim Thug is a rapper and record executive from the Northside of Houston, Texas. He rose to fame in 2003 with his debut album Already Platinum. Since then he has been nominated for a Grammy Award, released numerous albums, and is a respected figure in the hip hop industry.
At the age of 17, Slim began to perform at local high school parties, catching the attention of legendary DJ Michael “5000” Watts and landing him a spot as a featured artist on the Swisha House 98 mixtape. With the mentoring from Watts and his own will to be self-made, Slim recognized the importance of becoming an independent artist. After amicably parting ways with Swisha House, Slim Thug started his own record label, Boss Hogg Outlawz (BHO).
In addition to being a successful entertainer and businessman, Slim has also managed to add author and philanthropist to his resume. As recognition for his many efforts to give back to his community, February 25, 2014 was officially named “Slim Thug Day” by the Mayor Annise Parker and the City of Houston.
About Z-Ro
Prolific Houston rapper Z-Ro is a local legend in the Texas scene, appearing on countless tracks with peers like Scarface, Gucci Mane, Bun B, and Pimp C. Born Joseph Wayne McVey, Z-Ro (aka the Mo City Don) grew up with equal parts inspiration from hardcore rappers like 2Pac and the Geto Boys and soulful crooners like Babyface and Sam Cooke. His style merged the two genres, bringing a hard edge to explicitly honest songs about love, relationships, and street life.
Z-Ro got his start with the Screwed Up Click, a crew of Houston rappers led by the late DJ Screw. He made his solo debut in 1998 with Look What You Did to Me, following it with an album release each year (except 1999 and 2013) for nearly two decades. After signing with Rap-a-Lot Records in 2004, he released his eighth overall LP, The Life of Joseph W. McVey. His “drug series” – Crack, Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, and Angel Dust – spanned the 2008 to 2012 period. Crack was his highest-charting album to date (number 48) and featured Slim Thug, Mike D, Paul Wall, Pimp C, and Mya. Released in 2016, “Drankin’ & Drivin’” peaked in the Top Ten of the R&B chart.
